QUEERTOPIA: THE MINCEBALL

Back with a bang, Queertopia promises to be a phenomenal evening. Belfast’s queerest cabaret evening is offering up spoken word, poetry, performance art, singing, dancing, and drag. Ran by every queerling’s favourite mothers, Gemma Hutton aka Dick Von Dyke and Electra La Cvnt, expect an evening filled with glitter and fun. With special guests Stephen Fae and Dirtbird from Dublin’s cabaret night SPICEBAG and the evening being seen off by DJ Pony of Ponyhawke fame, there is no better way to end Outburst Festival.

Queertopia will be in the Black Box on Saturday the 18th of November, doors at 9.30pm and cost of entry is £8.

AMBER HAWK SWANSON

An exciting addition to the exhibition scene, Amber Hawk Swanson has brought her Amber Doll Project to be experienced in Belfast. Having commissioned a life-sized sex doll in 2006, Hawk Swanson’s ongoing project explores perceptions of gender, sexuality, and identity through interactions between artist, doll, and viewer. A thought-provoking lens through which one regards gender and sexualisation, the project won’t disappoint.

The Amber Doll Project can be seen at the PS² Gallery from Thursday the 9th of November to Saturday the 2nd of December, and admission is free.

ALTERNATIVE MISS WORLD

The MAC has truly outdone themselves with this one. Established in 1972 by the artist Andrew Logan, Alternative Miss World celebrates queer unconventionality and the concept of transformation. The event is running in conjunction with their current exhibition Shonky: The Aesthetics of Awkwardness, the evening also offers a special screening of Jes Benstock’s The British Guide to Showing Off, a documentary on the history of Alternative Miss World. This will be introduced by Shonky’s curator John Walter, who later will be conversing with Andrew Logan himself. As if the night couldn’t be better, DJ Venus Dupree will spin us into the wee hours with her legendary sets. Everyone is encouraged to come dressed sensationally, with a prize for the best dressed.

Andrew Logan’s Alternative Miss World is being shown at The MAC on Friday the 17th of November at 7.30pm. Tickets are £15, with £12 early bird tickets available.

books v cigarettes

An interactive experience, booksVcigarettes takes its name from George Orwell’s famous essay that evaluates the value and price of reading against other pursuits. The event is a reading group which focuses in on queer writing and ideas. The festival edition of this reading group has decided to focus on Leslie Feinberg’s Stone Butch Blues, a novel that focuses on identity as a butch lesbian in the American white working classes.

The discussion will commence from 11 am on Saturday the 18th of November in the Black Box Green Room.

LET US EAT CAKE

Anthony Luvera’s exhibition Let Us Eat Cake follows seven members of the LGBTQ+ over a period of nine months and their experiences with being queer in Northern Ireland. The exhibition explores the issues of identity, representation, and equality. The exhibition’s research was blogged and can be accessed at letuscake.blog.

Let Us Cake runs from Friday the 10th of November to Saturday the 23rd December in Belfast Exposed, and admission is free.
